Masterclass 2025 Recap: The Body-Mind Connection
The ESVCE Masterclass 2025 on “The Body-Mind Connection” was held on November 19, 2025 via Zoom, and featured three outstanding presentations exploring the intersection of physical and behavioural health.
Presentations
1. “The Gut-Behavior Connection”
Dr. Carlo Siracusa — Associate Professor of Clinical Small Animal Behavior and Welfare, Penn Vet, University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Siracusa explored the emerging evidence linking the gut microbiome to behaviour, mood, and stress responses in companion animals.
2. “Reproductive System and Behavior”
Dr. Xavier Levy — Head of Reproduction, Obstetrics, and Pediatrics, Bordeaux South
Dr. Levy discussed the complex interactions between reproductive hormones and behaviour, with clinical implications for neutering decisions.
3. “Neurology Meets Behavior”
Prof. Holger Volk — Professor of Small Animal Diseases, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover; Honorary Professor, Royal Veterinary College London
Prof. Volk presented cases illustrating the overlap between neurological conditions and behavioural presentations, emphasising the importance of thorough diagnostic workups.
